The ship in the crest symbolizes maritime activities, stalk of grain emphasizes the role of agriculture. The mount stands for mineral resources and the fort for the past military glory. The lamp and the book symbolize spread of light and learning and removal of ignorance. The motto of the University is Satyam Param Dheemahi (seek the highest truth). The Utkal University founded in 1943 is the 17th University of the country and the first of Orissa province. Pandit Nilakantha Dash, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati and Pandit Godavarish Mishra, amongst other doyens of modern Orissa, played a leading role in the establishment of the University. On the 27th Nov. 1943, the Utkal University started functioning at Ravenshaw College ( now University), Cuttack.
