Over afternoon tea at Carcosa Seri Negara, three distributors of Amway’s skincare and colour cosmetics brand, Artistry, chat about their experience with the brand.
Beaming brightly, Mandy Ng says: “I found out about Artistry (skincare line) from my boyfriend (now husband) who was involved with Amway. I had bad skin, so he introduced it to me, and after two months, my skin really improved a lot. It’s been nine years since I started using it and I love it,” she says.
For Agnes Shalini, 39, Artistry is the first skincare brand she has ever used.
“I started using it after I got married at 20. I’m really satisfied with it because it doesn’t spoil my skin!”
Zainab Ahmad used Artistry exclusively for the last 18 years. The 49-year-old, whose looks belie her age, says that her skin’s been “unmarked” since she started using the products: “Even if I have one or two pimples, I’m not worried because Artistry has a range to reduce pimples.”
Her skin has a peachy glow, without a blemish in sight. In fact, all three women have a glow in their complexion.
Artistry was established by Amway Corporation in the US and was launched in Malaysia in 1976. It has two product categories – skincare and colour cosmetics – and promotion is largely done through word-of-mouth.
”The secret of Artistry is its use of botanical ingredients,” says Ng.
Zainab quips, “It’s also a safe product to use and there is a money-back guarantee if it doesn’t suit your skin. But in my 18 years in this business, no one has returned any of the products.”
Their husbands, who are also in the Amway business, use the products too.
Says Agnes: “My eldest son also uses Artistry skincare. He plays basketball, so he’s got to use an SPF moisturiser to protect him from the sun.”
“Skincare for men is very common now,” rejoins Ng.
“My 13-year-old daughter uses Artistry. Young people always get pimples, but she doesn’t because she uses these products,” says Zainab, joining in the chorus.
“Good skin needs to be cleaned, toned and moisturised. If our customers have special needs, we’ll consult them and help them with what they need,” she adds.
Amway provides their distributors with regular training and rally sessions, as well as previews of the latest products.
“We’ve had scientists here before to explain how the ingredients are used, the development, the package and why they put all these natural ingredients into the products,” says Ng.
Do the ladies have any difficulty promoting the name, seeing it’s not widely advertised?
“Some people would know about Artistry, some wouldn’t. A lot of people misunderstand that being in direct sales means being pushy. We are not. It’s about sharing, and it’s up to the customer to decide what they want,” offers Ng.
“We are helping others to be more beautiful like us,” interjects Agnes playfully.
I ask what their favourite products are, and that got them thinking hard.
Ng confesses, “I have all four ranges – Pure White, Moisture, Delicate Care and Clarifying – as well as the speciality products. This is because our skin changes all the time. But my favourite is Time Defiance Vitamin C + Wild Yam. This is the brand I’d share with my friends or any new user of Artistry products.”
“My favourite is the Pure White range (Artistry’s skin lightening range),” says Zainab. “Nowadays, it’s popular to brighten the face, isn’t it? I introduce it to all my customers.”
“I use Replenishing White Cream and Time Defiance Night Lotion,” weighs in Agnes. “The replenishing eye cream is also wonderful.”
Their enthusiasm seemingly endless, the women continue to prattle on about the various Artistry products, their business and the wonders of each product.
