There is an increasing popularity and demand to obtain both academic and professional accounting and finance qualifications. In many countries, accountancy is a graduate profession and therefore mandatory that students possess both academic and professional qualifications.
In response to these trends the UoG and SBL have developed a programme that will integrate the professional accounting qualifications into an MSc in Accounting and Finance. This will enable part qualified accountants that have passed the ACCA Fundamentals or hold a CIMA Advanced Diploma; the opportunity to further their studies and obtain an MSc Accounting and Finance whilst at the same time receiving assistance with completing their professional exams with ACCA, CIMA or AIA.
The Project and Personal Development Module is specifically designed to include those areas that students on a taught degree course would normally expected to be assessed in, but were missing from a professional exam based course. These areas include Research Skills, IT Skills and “Soft” Skills such as presentation, questioning and listening.

Professionals with degrees in accounting are in greater demand than ever, as companies of all sizes face greater oversight by various stakeholders. The competitive pressures and new opportunities in the global economy require expertise in traditional accounting as well as the knowledge and foresight to help companies adapt to change and capitalise on opportunities.
Medium forecasts through to 2012 indicate that this demand for accountants will continue to grow faster than the national average for most other occupations. Jobs for accountants and auditors alone will grow by 22.4 percent by the year 2012 (McKinsey Report January 2008). Greater regulatory oversight and substantial fluctuations in the economy will help create steady demand for those with extensive accounting training from accredited programmes.
Employers value candidates with strong accounting skills paired with deep business knowledge. The Accounting degree has been designed to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge required by future employers.
The Accounting degree develops knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to work effectively in a variety of business settings. Core competencies in technology, critical thinking, and communication are emphasised throughout the programme. Students will also have broad exposure to varied business disciplines including management, organisational behaviour, economics, statistics and finance, and learn how the general manager integrates these disciplines to meet the strategic goals of the organisation.
