Oil Rig Jobs
Are you in great physical condition, looking for an adventure, and for a job where earnings potential is high? There are more than a few people in the world seeking a job that combines all of those elements. But interestingly, the number of people seeking oil production jobs -- particularly on onshore and offshore oil rigs -- is not enough to fill demand.
The majority of entry-level jobs in the petroleum industry are in the ‘oil production’ sector. Generally, oil production is the process of drilling and extracting oil from underground (or underwater) reservoirs. The world’s oil production takes place both onshore and offshore. There's a good chance you've noticed oil rigs off the coast of California or in the Gulf of Mexico — or elsewhere in the world.
In U.S. controlled waters, thousands of oil platforms are either floating or attached to the ocean floor off the shores of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Many of these platforms are huge structures that house multiple drilling rigs and also house workers. Though some of the platforms can be moved, they are, for the most part, like self-sustaining steel islands, complete with helicopters pads. Once drilled, oil and gas are transported from the platforms through sub-sea pipelines to refineries located in the gulf states, especially in Texas and Louisiana.
Types of Oil Rigs
Semi Submersible
This floating drilling unit has pontoons and columns that, when flooded with seawater, cause the pontoons to submerge to a predetermined depth. Although it is moved by wave action, it sits low with a large part of its structure under water. This, combined with eight huge mooring anchors, make it a very stable installation and the preferred choice for exploring deep water wells.
There can be over one hundred people on board and although smaller than a platform, conditions are usually good.
This type of rig makes its money by drilling a hole in the seabed then it moves to the next location. There is often an urgency to get things done quickly. With advancing technology some semi submersibles can drill in water depths over five thousand feet.
Platform
This immobile structure can be built from concrete or steel and rests on the seabed. When oil or gas is located a platform may be constructed to drill further wells at that site and also to produce the hydrocarbon. Although some platforms can be small, most are massive compared to the other types of installations.
Jack Up
This is a mobile drilling rig, different to the semi submersible. Instead of floating over its drilling location the Jackup has long leg structures, which it lowers to and into the sea bed raising the rig out of the water. The obvious limitation with this type of installation is the depth of water it can operate in. The maximum being five hundred feet. Surprisingly, many marine oil fields are not too deep for this type of installation to operate.
Drill Ship: As the name suggests this is a ship shaped drilling vessel. Unlike the semi submersible and the Jackup, it does not require tugboats to tow it to location. Although they are not as stable as semi submersibles they also drill in very deep waters.
Flotels:This is usually a converted semi submersible. It is attached to a platform by a long gangway to provide extra accommodation. This, along with the usual leisure and catering facilities, is their only task. They do have a marine crew in charge of stabilizing the installation.
Floating Production & Storage Units:They are usually converted takers or purpose built units although semi submersibles have also been used. They are attached to a seabed well head and they produce and store the oil until another tanker takes it from them. They are used to produce from small wells where it would be too expensive to build a platform.
Oil and Gas Pipeline Jobs :
Pipelines not only carry the crude oil we need for refining, but much of the refined product as well, such as natural gas. There are over 200,000 miles of pipelines crisscrossing our nation pumping billions of gallons of oil and natural gas to collection points such as refineries, power stations, reserve tanks, and distributions stations, as you read this. To put that into perspective, the United States Interstate Highway System stretches for just 46,726 miles. Therefore, our petroleum pipeline network is over four times longer than our interstate highway system! It is by far the largest network of its kind in the world. Continental Europe does not even come close.
Careers in the petroleum pipeline industry are available and varied. This is no surprise given that pipelines can be found virtually everywhere across the globe, be it in cities, remote areas, near refineries, in towns, under the sea, and near electrical power plants and airports. For this reason, pipeline jobs offer potential candidates an incredible swath of terrains and climates to work in, be it offshore drilling platforms, the desert sands of the Middle East, Alaska, downtown New York City, fields in the Midwest, or in the deep southern states all along the Gulf Coast.
Pipeline jobs typically come in two flavors: direct-hire and contract work. Both typically offer superb benefits and sometimes relocation packages.

This page lists positions available where it is possible to get a job without previous offshore experience. Having previous experience offshore will usually make finding a job much easier.
Some jobs require skills and qualifications as appropriate. For example to get a job as a rig welder you will need to be a skilled and qualified welder.
Deck Crew:
Maintenance Roustabout ($47,000); main duties include general upkeep and cleansing of deck area of rig. Also painting.
Maintenance Forman ($59,000); responsible for Maintenance Roustabouts work.
Roustabout ($54,500); main duties include guiding the crane as loads are moved about the deck, supplying equipment to the rig floor as requested and keeping pipe deck and main deck areas clean and tidy. Will also assist Roughnecks on the drill floor when required. This usually only happens when the Roughnecks are too busy to get a meal break. The Roustabout will get his meal, then go to the drill floor allowing one Roughneck to get his break. Then each Roughneck swops out until everyone has eaten. Roustabouts are often members of the streacher party.
Assistant Crane Operator ($59,000); is an experienced Roustabout who is also qualified to operate the cranes and will often be next in line for promotion to Crane Operator when a position arises.
Crane operator ($69,500); is responsible for all crane operations on the rig and from the supply boats. He is supervisor to his assistant and the Roustabouts.
Drill Crew:
Roughneck ($59,000); works on the rig floor in a team of three and is responsible for the operation of equipment and machines as required by the particular operation being carried out at that time by the driller. While drilling, one Roughneck is present in the mud process room at all times. He takes mud weights and ensures shakers and other machines are working properly.
Pumpman (Assistant Derrickman) ($60,500); Assistant to the Derrickman in the mud pump room. Works on the drill floor as a Roughneck when required.
Derrickman ($65,000); is responsible for the maintenance and smooth operation of the mud pumps and mud holding pits among other machines in the mud pump room. Also assists the Roughnecks when very busy on drill floor and not required in the pump room.
Assistant Driller ($72,500); has many tasks to perform most vary depending on particular drilling operation being carried out at the time. He is direct supervisor for Derrickman, Pumpman and Roughnecks.
Driller ($86,000); has a high level of responsibility, and is in charge of everything happening on and above the rig floor. He is the man that actually operates the drilling equipment, making the hole in the sea bed. Which is the reason the rig is there in the first place.
Catering Crew:
Steward/ess ($45,000); assist in the kitchen, clean the accommodation and do the laundry.
Cook ($59,000) Night baker ($59,000) Camp boss ($63,500); is in charge of the catering department.
The above do not get as much assistance as they will be used to in restaurants, hotels or the forces. They are expected to do more of the cleaning up etc. than usual.
Control Room Jobs:
Barge Engineer ($89,000) is in charge of control room operations his next in command is; Control Room Operator (CRO) ($65,000) followed by the entry level personnel; Assistant CRO (ACRO) ($59,000)
Certified seamen from Able to Master Seamen are among the many Mariners on oilrigs, as a result of legislation defining certain Rigs as ships. In the control room of Semi-Submersibles the stability of the rig is controlled. Liquid transfers like diesel and fresh water from supply boats to the rig storage tanks are also controlled here. It is also the control area when the vessel is moving location.
Electrical Department:
Electrician($65,000)
Electronic technician($74,000)
Chief electrician($83,000)
Maintenance supervisor (Electrical)($87,500)
All the above are responsible for the maintenance and repair of all the electrical equipment on board the rig, right down to changing light bulbs.
On occasion they may have to work more than the normal 12 hour shift. They can be called out at any time during their time off to fix a major problem. This is rare.
There will be times when they will have to work at height. In a work basket, hoisted by crane or air winch. Occasionally they may have to don a riding belt (harness) and get hoisted by air winch.
Rig Management:
Toolpusher($108,000); works in the rig offices and the rig floor. He also has responsibilities on the main deck. He is usually an experienced driller.
Offshore Installation Manager (OIM)($110,000); has often worked his way up through the drill crew ranks. He is in overall charge of the rig. Hence sometimes called "Man In Charge" (MIC).
Company man/woman($160,000); is the oil companies on board representative employee. He is not employed by the drilling company operating the rig. On a drilling rig an oil company employee works with the drilling company to supervise its interests, helping the strategy for drilling the well.
Mechanical Department
Motorman($57,500)
Assistant mechanic($65,000)
Mechanic($72,000)
Chief mechanic($80,000)
Maintenance supervisor (Mechanical)($87,500)
All the above are responsible for the maintenance and repair of the diesel generators and all other mechanical operations on the rig including the rig floor equipment. They carry out regular maintenance on every machine on the rig.
On occasion they may have to work more than the normal 12 hour shift. They can be called out at any time during their time off to fix a major problem. This is rare.
SubseaDepartment: Assistant Subsea Engineer ($65,000); can sometimes be promoted from Roughnecks. More usually from a mechanical background.
Subsea Engineer ($86,000); is responsible for the Blow Out Presenter unit and the motion compensation system of the rig among other duties.
Other Jobs:
Welder ($62,000); Two types, first is the rig welders. They are permantly on one rig and carry out all day to day repairs and building of new metalwork. They are always busy. When there is a big project often a squad of welders are hired to finish the job quickly. These guys move from rig to rig wherever their company has a contract.
Scaffolders($57,500); are not tied to any one rig. They go to different installations depending on where their company has work.
Radio operator($62,000); Probably the easiest job in the world. Good money if you can stand it. Bring plenty books. However, it is a vital job.
Medic($69,000); They are rarely doctors but have a high level of medical training. Some are former nurses. On some smaller rigs they double up as a Rig Safety & Training Co-ordinator (RSTC). They are responsible for the upkeep of the Sick Bay and the medical stocks. Issuing medicines like a pharmicist. Most rigs now carry out medical checks on all employees every six months or so. Keeping of rig medical records. The rig also has designated first aiders in every crew.
Rig Safety & Training Co-ordinator (RSTC)($80,000); Some say, this is a well paid job for the amount of work involved. There is a lot of responsibility. A job for someone who is a good communicator, good organizational and computer skills. You will also require full knowledge of the offshore safety laws and company policies.
Mud engineer($72,500); is in charge of the drilling fluids being used. S/he will likely have a degree in chemistry and will have a good knowledge of drilling procedures.
Materials man/woman(Store man/woman)($59,000); Responsible for the maintenance of the stores and stock ordering and receiving. Must be computer literate. One drawback of this comfortable job is that on smaller rigs with only one store person they sometimes have to get up at all hours to check the cargo coming off the boat.
Painter($57,500); Given his work from the Barge Engineer, the Painter is responsible for the rig painting program. Like the Forth Road Bridge it is a never ending job. Often working at heights with scaffolding safety harness and or work basket hoisted by the crane. Usually builds his own scaffolding. May have an assistant, especially if the rig does not have a Maintenance Roustabout squad.
