Women with lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids during the third trimester were six times more likely to develop depression than those with higher levels, a small case control study at the School of Psychiatry and the Black Dog Institute at the prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney found.
The study, which measured omega-3 fatty acid levels in 38 pregnant women found that omega-3 fatty acid levels were lower in the 16 who developed depression.
High docosahexanoic acid and lower omega-6 fatty acid levels were associated with a reduced risk of developing depression, the study published in the Psychiatry Research (online 5 March) showed.
The study authors say that in light of the ongoing concerns about the use of antidepressants in pregnancy, further studies are warranted to explore the value of omega-3 fatty acids in preventing postnatal depression.
And since a high intake of omega-3 fatty acids is already recommended in pregnancy because of the neuro-developmental benefits for the infant, this advice could be widened to include potential prevention of depression, they say.
They say women are depleted of omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy because of fetal diversion, supplements rather than oily fish may be the safest way to correct this, because of the risk of mercury ingestion.
