Students of Jadavpur University in Kolkata on Thursday are protesting against the university authorities’ decision to install Close Circuit Television Cameras on campus.
Students from the Jadavpur University- known for its engineering and science faculties- staged a sit-in demonstration against the university’s Executive Committee decision to install 16 CCTVs on the university campus. For more than 24hours, many senior officials, registrar and the university’s vice-chancellor have been confined to their offices as a result of “Gherao” (encirclement) made by the students.
The move is seen as the university’s way to stop its grounds being used for Anti-social activites. Students have protested the move saying that the college were invading their rights and were treating them like terrorists. The students have also opposed a new code that makes it obligatory for students to show their identity cards at the gates while entering the campus – and for visitors to leave the university premises by 9pm.
Though he was unable to leave the building due to students protest, the University Vice-chancellor Pradip Ghosh is unwilling to back down and is planning to put to practice the new code soon.
