Access to Flipboard barred in China

Posted on Wednesday, May 18th, 2011 at 9:51 am

Flipboard, based in Palo Alto, California, is a social magazine that collects web links from Twitter and Facebook and displays the content in the form of a magazine.

According to Flipboard CEO Mike McCue, Chinese users have now been denied access to this experience. Since the servers have been blocked, even if one has successfully logged in, the data cannot be displayed. Also, users who had setup Flipboard from outside China were able to use Facebook and Twitter when in China. This has also been blocked

He is not sure whether the users still have access to Google Reader, Instagram, or Flicker. He expects a lot more clarity son. The iPad app is still available in the Chinese app store.

McCue claims that Chinese constitute a small percentage of the app’s users. Also the Chinese clones such as Tencent’s  ICare, MagSina and the NetEase reader are very popular.

According to McCue, these are complete visual replicas except for being super slow in performance. So, the question is whether the Chinese censor US services to protect their market.

Flipboard which is valued at $ 200 million, raised $50 million recently.
