An optometrist is a primary eye care professional who provides a range of vision and eye care services, including conducting eye exams, diagnosing and treating vision problems and eye diseases, prescribing corrective lenses, and managing eye health. They are not medical doctors (MDs or DOs), but rather hold a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree.

Key responsibilities :
Comprehensive eye exams:
Assessing vision, eye health, and overall health as it relates to the eyes.
Diagnosis and treatment of vision problems:
Identifying and managing conditions like near-sightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia, and prescribing corrective lenses (eyeglasses and contact lenses).
Detection and management of eye diseases:
Identifying and managing conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, and referring patients to ophthalmologists when necessary.
Pre- and post-operative care:
Providing care for patients before and after eye surgery.
Patient education:
Educating patients on proper eye care, disease prevention, and the importance of regular eye exams.
