How do you think technology has benefited the classifieds business? : Techthirsty

September 11, 2013: Technology has effectively changed every business and the classifieds business too. With traditional and old media, classifieds were restricted to geographies. But the introduction of the internet has brought far-off regions within reach. Today, anyone from anywhere can access a classified and respond to it.

Markets have also expanded. Since Internet is a faster medium to connect with potential buyers, sellers are now posting online ads for sale – which they never did earlier. For instance, low value items like a book were considered prohibitively expensive to sell individually and would never be advertised for. But with internet, it is no longer considered an expensive proposition.

Publishing classified online is much easier and cost-effective for sellers. With many free to use classified services, like, a seller can now save costs and go for higher visibility at the same time.

Drop-shipping: The unusual way of setting up e-commerce business : Business Today

June 06, 2012: In this growing market, a lot of manufacturers are willing to drop-ship, or send products directly to an end-consumer on receiving an order from a retailer (seller).

As a seller, you identify and contact suppliers or manufacturers for products you want to sell. After finding a suitable supplier who drop-ships, the products are listed for sale on your site, classified sites such as, and, deals aggregators such as and online marketplaces such as, and

{quote}The retailer does not require to stock products as orders are shipped to the end-buyer directly by the supplier, who gets paid by the retailer. Some drop-shipping companies even dispatch products with the branding of the seller. You can find them on business-to-business portals such as and

As you are free to fix resale prices for the products, the margin between the prices offered by the supplier and the retail price will be your profit. Of course, there will be some costs in managing the retail business. So the profitability in this business depends on your ability to find reliable suppliers offering sufficiently low prices.

"Though drop-shipping is not a new concept in India, it is still gaining momentum and penetrating deeper into markets. It is popular with larger e-retailers who want to minimise investments in stocking up inventories. Apart from bigger players, several niche e-retailers are also using this model extensively," says Dinesh Agarwal.

A drop-ship based business also offers greater flexibility and allows the seller to test new markets without having to worry about unsold inventories. This should help identify niche products.

Drop-shipping helps manufacturers as well.

Cool summer: Into the working world : IBNLive

May 03, 2012: CHENNAI: Gone are idyllic, lazy summer vacations as enterprising and active college students explore multiple avenues to earn a quick buck during the holidays. In their attempt to utilise the vacation to try something new while simultaneously gaining financial independence, many have found that the Internet gives them the perfect opportunity to achieve this. Previously, when they needed some extra cash students ran to blood donation centers where they got paid for a few minutes of discomfort. Now they have learned that turning on the computer will show them how to go to work with quick and simple ways to make money fast.

A local classified search on sites like OLX,, clickindia, edukart and seedsonline will show that numerous opportunities exist for students, opening up an entirely new chapter in online networking. This makes it easy for them to access jobs, which is a boon for the majority who are from the middle class.

Buying and selling has been the norm for most consumers of the Internet, but it is the youth who are actually opening up new horizons with novel ways to utilise what the web has to offer. Statistics from online recruiting sites this year show a 40 per cent increase from last year in the number of students taking up summer jobs.

Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) companies too are now calling these summer job seekers and engaging them in jobs like data entry, list making and web designing. Students offer easy labour at a lower cost, without the hassle of full-time employment. These students, depending on the nature of the work, earn `3,000 to `12,000 including incentives.

Though a great number of students work to earn money for their own use, there are those who want to reduce the economic burden on their parents. Many offer part time sharing of skills and services like tutoring, hobby classes, banner arts, babysitting, garden maintenance, freelance photography, courier services, project writing, pizza delivery, data entry jobs, taking care of old people and house sitting. Such offbeat services find many takers among the city’s youth.

Even school students are in the summer job market. They work at major textile shops during their vacation, earning up to `4,500 for 45 days. Aspiring entrepreneurs look at these jobs as an opportunity to acquire the qualities required torun a business, and as a boost in their pursuit of an MBA degree. among top 50 digital brands: The Economic Times
